In 2010 Martin Ed Chatterton dropped the 'Martin' and turned to crime. His first book, A Dark Place To Die, published in 2011, was Random House Book of the Month. A Dark Place To Die was optioned by Escapade Media/Lionsgate and is currently at advanced script development stage as a six-part, $12 million, UK/Australian co-produced TV series titled The Act of Killing. Underland, the sequel to A Dark Place To Die, was published in 2013 and Remission, the third in the series, was published in September 2017.
Prior to going over to the dark side (at least part of the time) Ed Chatterton had been involved creatively in publishing for more than thirty years. Writing and illustrating as 'Martin Chatterton' his children’s books were published in more than a dozen languages, and have won or been shortlisted in awards in the UK, US and Australia.
Along the way he has collaborated with some of the leading names in children’s literature including Children's Laureates Julia Donaldson and Michael Rosen, as well as such luminaries as Antony Horowitz, Alexander McCall Smith, Tony Bradman, Tony Mitton, Andy Seed and Michaela Morgan.
He has co-written (and illustrated) five books in the globally successful Middle School series with the world’s biggest-selling author, James Patterson, and co-writing the thriller, Absolute Zero with James for Random House
2015 also saw Martin co-writing and illustrating Alexander the Elephant, a picture book for the ABC alongside Australian rock legend and ARIA-award winning musician, Pat Davern. In October 2017, Alexander the Elephant was nominated for an ARIA award for Best Children's Album and is currently in development as a 52-episode animated TV series by Blue Rocket Productions.
His surreal three-part time-travel comedy series, Mort, was republished in 2015 by Random House and has gone on to become an Australian best-seller.
In 2017, Ed completed his PhD, the subject of which (The Last Slave Ship) is the legacy of Liverpool’s role in the Atlantic Slave Trade. The central part of this PhD is a novel which features several characters familiar to readers of the Frank Keane series. A children's picture book, Winter of the White Bear (Dirt Lane Press) which tells the story of slavery through fable was published in 2019. That project is currently in development as a high-end animated special with Hungry Head Productions and funding from the BFI (British Film Institute) Young Audiences Content Fund. Dotty, a six-part comedy crime drama, co-written with Brian Viner, was purchased for development by Bill Kenwright Film in 2019. Martin and Brian are represented by Luke Speed at the Curtis Brown agency for film and television work.
As a public speaker Ed has appeared extensively at schools, literary festivals and events, conferences, and on TV and radio in the UK, Australia and the USA. He is represented by the Nexus Arts Speakers Agency in Australia and by Authors Abroad for work globally.
